STRESS REDUCTION GROUPS

Powerful Mind
In October & November, this weekly class will offer group hypnosis sessions that tap into inner strength for stress reduction and well-being.  Facilitator: Eric Torres, Psy.D.
Tuesday 6 - 7 pm

Powerful Mind Intensive
A 6-sessions intensive to reinforce your stress management skills and enhance your capacity for relaxation as well as concentration. The seminar consists of 2-weekend 3-hour workshops, and four weekly sessions to help practice your new set of skills for stress management. Facilitators: Marc Puccinelli, Ms.Ed candidate, University of Miami and Eric Torres, Psy.D.
Session 1: Saturday, March 20, 9 am - 12 noon.
Session 2 thru 5: Tuesdays, March 23 & 30; April 6 & 13, 6 – 7 pm.
Final Session: Saturday, April 24, 9 am - 12 noon.

Enhance your physical and emotional wellbeing by practicing mind-body connection techniques.

Belly Dancing for Cancer Survivors
Basic posture, isolations and shimmies. Occasional use of veils and finger cymbals. Class begins with a warm-up and ends with a cool down period. Be on time!

Weekly Support Groups 
Ongoing WEEKLY SUPPORT groups, led by licensed professionals are the heart of our program.  Our groups can help you maintain hope, regain a sense of control and let you know that you are not alone in this time of need.

We have face-to-face as well as internet support groups.  We also have groups in Spanish (face to face and internet).  All groups are facilitated by licensed, trained, psycho-oncology professionals.

Individual Support Sessions

Available to survivors currently attending programs at The Wellness Community. Limited time offering!

Monthly Networking Groups
These drop-in groups meet to discuss issues and information specific to certain types of cancer. It is an opportunity to share problems and solutions, as well as support and inspiration.  Family members and caregivers are welcome.

Networking Groups

Bereavement
Learn how to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of grief in the supportive comfort of others who are also experiencing the loss of a loved one to cancer. Attending all sessions is highly recommended.

Family Circle
Helping Children & Families Cope when a Parent has Cancer
(bilingual workshops as needed)
Health psychologists and child therapists have come together to develop this innovative program to help parents with cancer and their children.
Parents’ Program Highlights: Communicating with children in age-appropriate ways. Maintaining healthy routines. Parenting when you feel lousy.
Kids’ Program Highlights: Addresses children’s questions about what is cancer. Helps alleviate fears and anxiety. Eases feelings of isolation. Helps child refocus their childhood activities. The children’s program is activity-based and arranged into age appropriate groups for children from 4 to 15 years old. Lunch offered at the end of the program.

Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster
In this session you will be guided through various strategies and mind-body techniques to help you prepare for surgery and help yourself in the recovery process. These techniques are used at major medical centers throughout United States.

Special Education Programs (RSVP Required)
Look Good Feel Better

A free nationwide program that helps women with appearance-related side effects while undergoing cancer treatment. The workshop includes instruction in skin care and makeup application, tips on wigs, head coverings, and nail care. A complimentary makeup tool kit filled with donated products from the cosmetic industry will be provided. This program is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society, CTFA, and NCA. The class is conducted by a Cosmetologist trained by ACS and it is offered in English and Spanish (bilingual sessions) as needed. Limited to 8 people. Please reserve your spot soon!

Recapturing Joy: Savoring Life’s Gifts Large & Small
This interactive workshop will explore Positive Psychology as a way of reclaiming life’s joy and passion that may be difficult for survivors and caregivers to maintain during a cancer experience. Through discussion and personal exploration, workshop participants will tap into inner strengths such as creativity, gratitude, hope, and forgiveness. Each weekly session will start with sampling of delicious chocolates to reconnect with our bodies and our joy.

Cancer and Kisses
Dr. Marilyn Volker will address the least discussed, yet crucially important part of recovery and quality of life: SEX. She will also examine the impact of cancer treatment on sexuality and will set the groundwork for enhancing your sexual experiences.

Women and Body Image: Loving Yourself Inside and Out
An important part recovery from cancer involves feeling good in your body again. Developing a positive body image and a healthy mental attitude is crucial to a woman's happiness and wellness. During our meeting we will discuss body image challenges and explore ways to begin to change our attitudes towards more positive and healthy ways of appreciating our bodies.

Speaking Through Music
A 4-week seminar to explore music and art as a healthy outlet for stress as well as a different way to communicate the emotions around cancer. Activities will include drawing and writing while listening to music, and a discussion period at the end of every activity. Participants may be asked to bring their own music for some special sessions.

Coping Skills for Cancer Survivors and their Loved Ones: Dealing with the Stress of Chronic Illness
Research has shown that membership in a coping skills group may be beneficial for those who are dealing with the stresses of a chronic illness! The Wellness Community offers separate coping skills groups for cancer survivors and co-survivors (family members, friends, and/or caretakers). The groups last 6 weeks and meet independently once a week for 90 minutes each session. A research study aimed at evaluating the impact of the coping skills groups on quality of life will be conducted.

Frankly Speaking About Colorectal Cancer
Dr. Alberto Larcada, from Advanced Medical Specialties, will present the
latest innovations in the treatment of colorectal cancer, strategies for managing symptoms and side effects of treatment, the social and emotional challenges of the diagnosis, and survivorship issues specific to a diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

OFFSITE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Holistic Approaches to Side Effect Management and Wellbeing for the Cancer Survivor
In collaboration with The Nacron Family Cancer Survivor Networking Group, The Wellness Community presents Dr. Richard Browne, Acupuncture Physician, and Massage Therapist, Moshe Michaeli. Dr. Brown will discuss the benefits of integrating Oriental Medicine into conventional cancer treatments as well as the possibilities that Oriental Medicine offers everyone. Moyshe will discuss the therapeutic benefits of massage for persons dealing with the stress of cancer treatment or cancer caregiving.
